Release #025-05CWD NOT
FOUND IN PENNSYLVANIA HUNTER-KILLED DEER SAMPLES
Chronic wasting disease (CWD) was not detected in
samples taken from hunter-killed deer during the state's
2004 hunting season, according to Pennsylvania Game
Commission Executive Director Vern Ross.
Based on a significant increase in the number of deer
samples collected for testing, Ross noted that the test
results took two additional weeks to complete this year.
In 2004, 3,699 hunter-killed deer samples were collected
for testing, compared to the 2,003 deer sampled in 2003.
Last year's results for CWD also were negative.
Results showing that the CWD tests of hunter-killed elk
from 2004 were all negative and were announced on March
24.
