Fish Screening Task Force and Fish Passage Task Force
scheduled to meet in The Dalles
SALEM - Oregon's Fish Screening Task Force and Fish
Passage Task Force will meet April 29 in The Dalles.
The meeting is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the
conference room of ODFW's Fish Screen Shop, 3561 Klindt
Drive. The agenda includes general overviews of state
screening and passage programs, discussion of proposed
fish passage rules, funding possibilities and issues for
screening and passage, as well as updates on eastern
Oregon projects.
Fish screens are an essential part of any system that
diverts water from a public water body. They prevent the
loss of young fish as the water is used for irrigation,
municipal, hydroelectric or other beneficial purposes.
Fish passage must be addressed by owners and operators of
artificial obstructions at certain key times such as new
construction, major replacement, a change in permit
status, and abandonment. Providing adult and juvenile fish
passage to restore access to historic habitat is one of
the best ways to improve fish populations.
The Fish Screening Task Force is appointed by the Oregon
Fish and Wildlife Commission. Its seven members, who
represent agricultural, fisheries, and public interests,
meet several times each year to advise the Oregon
Department of Fish and Wildlife on fish screening policies
and issues.
The Fish Passage Task Force, a nine-member body
representing water users, the general public, fisheries
and conservation interests, is appointed by the ODFW
Director to advise ODFW on fish passage policies and
issues.
The meeting is open to the public. Reasonable
accommodations will be provided as needed for individuals
requesting assistive hearing devices, sign language
interpreters or large-print materials. Individuals needing
these types of accommodations may call the Information and
Education Division at 800-720-6339 or 503-947-6002 at
least 24 hours in advance of the meeting. For more
information, call Tom Stahl, State Fish Passage
Coordinator, at 503-947-6228, or Bernie Kepshire, State
Fish Screening coordinator, at 503-947-6229. |
